The Catch-22 of CO2 Alarmism

In the preceding sequence of posts we identified the Catch-22 of CO2 alarmism or Catch-CO2, coming from the universality of blackbody radiation with the radiation from a radiating gas being independent of its concentration:

  1. Universality gives even a trace gas like CO2 a radiative effect.
  2. Universality shows that doubling of CO2 has no effect.

Here 1 is the basic argument of climate alarmism, which is a correct powerful argument: CO2 may have an effect on climate even if is only a trace gas. Alarm! Alarm!

But now comes the Catch-22 of CO2 alarmism or the Catch-CO2:

  • The same argument which gives CO2 an effect, takes way the effect of doubling CO2.
  • The same argument which gives life to CO2 alarmism, takes the life away from CO2 alarmism.
  • God gives and God takes.

PS1 An alarmist may argue that the absorptivity of a gas may increase with concentration, but then the catch is that it then follows that it may decrease to zero as the concentration decreases to zero and thus may be vanishingly small for a trace gas and thus give CO2 zero effect: Again a Catch-CO2.

PS2 The next defense line may be to say that a trace gas like CO2 does not at all act like a blackbody, not even at all like a greybody with small absorptivity = emissivity, and that therefore the effect of CO2 can be anything, however without any science behind. Another Catch-CO2.

It seems that whatever CO2 may be (blackbody, greybody or anybody) the effect of doubling is either small or without scientific support.
